Bruk & Shazya

Did I ever tell you guys I grew up in a massive family? Like crazy massive. My mother would yell out about 6 different names before she got to the name of the child she was trying to call. In our clan, I am the last born in a family of 9 kids. This meant that I grew up playing not with my older siblings, but with their children, my nieces and nephews. And I have to admit I am eternally grateful to have been gifted with some amazing “extra” siblings from among the next generation of our clan.

So you can imagine how excited I was when my nephew / younger brother Bruk and his amazing wife Shazya got married a few weeks back. Because of #BrainInjuryLife we were unable to fly to Toronto for the wedding….but lemme tell you, it was a fight not to be texting/calling and demanding wedding detail from family members that were there to witness their union. It was a beautiful day from what I’ve heard and seen…. the kind of magical wedding day they both deserved.

Bruk and Shazya, we are so excited and happy that you chose to travel through life together and that we get to be a part of that journey. Gordon, Carmela, Miguel and I have been so excited and rooting for you both every step of the way over the last few years. I wanted to create a piece to reflect what I think of when I think of you both and these two elephants is what happened (it is based on an image I saw). Love you both and an official welcome to our crazy clan Shazya.

A contour line illustration of two elephants facing each other, in profile with their trunks entwined. Their bodies are coloured in shades of dark blue and grey and the linework is in metallic copper. The background is a warm dark brown.
